National Trust Petworth House and Park

Petworth House, under the stewardship of the National Trust, started as a simple Manor House during the Tudor period. It was later transformed into a baroque masterpiece inspired by the palace of Versailles by Charles Seymour, the 6th Duke of Somerset. The house was gifted to the National Trust in 1947 and now visitors can walk the grounds and enter the house to see the incredible art collection which includes Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Blake and landscapes by Turner. A trip to Petworth House and Park is truly unforgettable.

Cowdray Ruins

Discover the remains of a historic Tudor manor house at Cowdray Estate, where the original Cowdray House once stood. A devastating fire ripped through the building in September 1793 during renovations for the 8th Viscount Montague’s wedding and destroyed most of the property, leaving only the Kitchen Tower standing. While Cowdray Ruins is not open for regular visits, you can still enjoy heritage events and tours held throughout the year.

The biggest renovation in National Trust history

Uppark House and Estate dates back to the 1400s. It is a beautiful house with a fascinating history but is perhaps best known for the fire in 1989 which threatened the future of the house. The house was thoughtfully and respectfully restored by the National Trust which involved relearning long forgotten trades and crafts and there are even details in the house to show where old meets new. Unfortunately the house is currently closed until Summer 2025, but more can be found out by clicking on the button below.
