West Sussex is one of the UK’s most celebrated areas for food and wine production.
With farms, vineyards and artisanal food producers all around us, Petworth has the pick of some of the UK’s best food and wine.
Meat and Fish
Our restaurants and food shops work closely with local farms and fisheries who provide us with fantastic produce with a low carbon footprint.
The Hungry Guest Butchers and Fishmongers work with local producers to provide customers with the very best locally sourced fish and meat including grass-fed beef from Graffam Farm, free-range pork from Scotts Free Range Farm and sustainably sourced fish from the south coast.
Local Artisan Produce
You can also find products from the local area in The Hungry Guest artisan food shop including Ductonwood Honey, Noble and Stace chocolates and local gins and beers.
Fresh Produce
Heritage and organic fruit and vegetables are sourced from the Mereworth estate market garden; these can be purchased at The Hungry Guest shop and are served in our restaurants. Beef and venison from our farms is also available.
There are over 50 vineyards in the South Downs area.
The West Sussex area is a natural sun trap and has become the centre of wine production in the UK. You can find varieties of white, rose and sparkling wine in the area which often draws comparison to the French region of Champagne.
You can sample many of the local wines on menus of restaurants and pubs in Petworth but also, many of the vineyards offer tastings and tours.
Within a few miles of Petworth you can find Upperton Vineyard, Roebuck Estates, Stopham Vineyard and Wiston Estate Winery which all offer tours.
One of the regions most prestigious wine producers is Nyetimber
In 2018, their Head Winemaker was the first woman and first wine producer from outside of the Champagne region to win the coveted International Wine Maker of the Year award. Their sparkling wine varieties are internationally renowned and have brought more regard for West Sussex as a wine region.
Where to taste English wine
In Petworth town, you can sample fantastic local wines at The Angel Inn or E. Street Bar and Grill as well as taking a bottle home from The Hungry Guest.
