Discover the art of storytelling through an expressive drawing workshop inspired by the timeless photography of Jane Bown.
The day will begin with a special curator-led tour of Jane Bown’s work, offering insights into the stories and moments behind her iconic portraits. Following the tour, Mona Craven will guide participants through a series of expressive and playful drawing techniques.
Drawing offers a way to slow down and observe how Bown’s portraits capture the essence of personality. In this workshop, we will explore how texture, light, shadow, posture, and expression contribute to conveying emotion and narrative. Using sensory-based methods, participants will build confidence while delving into the subtleties of expression, shadow, and gesture present in Bown’s photography.
The aim is not to create a direct likeness, but rather to capture an essence, revealing inner worlds through expressive mark-making. This approach infuses character, depth, and storytelling into every drawing.
Join us for a fun and inspiring day in the welcoming spaces of Newlands House Gallery.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists. All materials provided.
